Max Dupain’s Vandyke Album is a Window into Culburra’s Iconic Past

11:45 AM, 21 April 2017

by Festival Staff

The Culburra Beach Festival is honoured to be able to display an exhibition of photos from Max Dupain’s Vandyke Album.

Donated to the State Library in 2012 the Vandyke Album is of exceptional importance in Australia’s photographic history. The album documents a camping trip by Max Dupain, Olive Cotton and their friends to Culburra in 1937. It gives context to Australia’s most iconic photograph, The Sunbaker. Dupain’s preferred version had clasped hands. The sole print of this version is in this album and the negative is lost. There are thought to be about 200 signed prints of the better known version where the right hand lies with fingers extended on the sand.

The album contains 108 photographic prints from this trip including 91 by Dupain and 17 by Cotton. For exhibition, 30 images have been reproduced from the original album, providing a glimpse into an idyllic seaside camping holiday, right here in Culburra Beach, exactly 80 years ago.

The exhibition will be on display in the Banksia Hall, Fred Evans Lane, between 10am and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday during the festival. Entry is free.

Let the Bunting Lead the Way!

4:34 PM, 20 April 2017

by Ernie Van Veen

The 2017 Culburra Beach Festival will be bigger and better than ever before. Because the festival will be spread across many locations, or ‘hubs’, the local community have worked together to create kilometres of bunting!

Each of the festival hubs ( Fred Evans Lane, Waratah Hall, Banksia Hall, Shops, Skate Park, Surfing Festival, Young Coasties concert ) will all be decorated with colourful bunting.

If you’re not sure where to go, look for the bunting!

Jerrinja Exhibition is Re-Exposed during the Culburra Beach Festival

3:30 PM, 20 April 2017

by Ernie Van Veen

Late last year a local community project invited young people connected to the local Jerrinja aboriginal community to submit applications to be part of a program run over several months to learn creative photography skills and traditional aboriginal language at Culburra Beach.

The result is the wonderful Jerrinja Exposed Creative Project. Ten young photographers used their newly-formed skills to illustrate the local language and how it relates to our country.

After a long run in the Egan’s Laneway outdoor gallery, and another run in the Shoalhaven Arts Centre Gallery, this exhibition will be presented once again in the Banksia Hall on both Saturday and Sunday of the festival. Don’t miss these wonderful photographs and stories. Entry is free.
